About 400 Words

400 Words is a storytelling project. It is a print magazine and a website, consisting of true stories, none over 400 words, by ordinary people on assigned themes. It's about the documentation of everyday life, saying a lot by saying a little. You can learn more, or order a copy, or tell a story of your own.

On Canadian Radio

Yesterday, Andrea Nene, a producer for the radio show The First Word on Toronto’s CIUT, was kind enough to do a short interview of me on the program. If I get audio, I’ll see if I can put it up here. Andrea is also writing a review of the first 400 Words issue for Broken Pencil, which I hadn’t heard about until lately, but is something like the Canadian version of Factsheet Five.

As you may have noticed, the site has changed a lot over the last few months, and it’s been in a state of total chaos at times. The bulk of the turmoil is over now, though. It’s not necessarily the most glamorous looking site in the world, and I’ll probably try to get the front page looking spiffier (is there anyone out there who does black-and-white line drawings? 400 Words needs a touch of the visual, bad), but for the most part it does what it needs to do: it’s a place where you can buy magazines, I can write the news without having to deal with Dreamweaver and an FTP client every time I want to do so, and I can post a lot more stories more frequently.

Here’s an update, too, on the Compulsions issue. I have all the materials. They need to be laid out in InDesign, and I’ve got a designer working on the cover. I’m planning to have it out in September.

In the meantime, I’m still collecting autobiographies and stories about work. I will be posting some of these on the web ongoingly. If the stories about work turn out to be interesting and good, this may very well become the theme of 400 Words number 3.
