About 400 Words

400 Words is a storytelling project. It is a print magazine and a website, consisting of true stories, none over 400 words, by ordinary people on assigned themes. It's about the documentation of everyday life, saying a lot by saying a little. You can learn more, or order a copy, or tell a story of your own.

Project Update

Hi, Four Hundos.

So: February is on its way out. Daylight savings time is, shockingly, just around the corner (it’s been moved forward this year). Bring it on. I can already feel spring fever, humming away in the background, waiting for its cue.

I checked my email inbox yesterday, and realized that there’ve been over 200 ‘work’ stories submitted so far. I am running about six weeks behind in trying to read and post them. (Trying to be methodical and work from oldest to newest, though sometimes I don’t manage to.) If you’ve sent me something and haven’t heard back yet, but it’s been less than six weeks, rest easy—I’ll get there. If it’s been more than a couple of months, it’s possible that your story has gotten lost somewhere (I try to be organized, I really do), so feel free to write and ask me what the damn if that’s the case.

In the meantime, please keep on sending your autobiographies, stories about work, stories about breakups.

I’ve had a few interesting suggestions for other themes: “misunderstandings” was one. Another was the idea to do a split issue, maybe “breakups/hookups.” Something sexy. (Though as far as hookups goes, I’m as interested in hearing about how people ended up with The One as how they bagged the office hotty. Could be an interesting mix…)

An idea for a theme- Twins. I’m bias since I am one and it would give me an opportunity to bash my brother.
