I’m pretty sure I got the idea out of Ray Oldenburg’s really fine The Great Good Place. Oh, and Rosemary, you missed by a mile…I’d never deign to become the chairperson of, well, the English Department within which–you got me–I teach! Thanks for the comments, you two.

My bad! Having done time in English Departments, I was punking on Dale’s tone, which I perceived to be a bit on the academic side of the street. But no, I don’t know Dale. I do really admire the leap he makes across time with this piece!

Can you point me in the direction of someone who wrote about third places? It strikes a chord. I think I’m looking for one.

This piece also makes me wonder what you went on to do after.
